What Is Zone Technique? | Centerville, Tennessee
Updated: Sep 24
If you’ve heard Dr. Rob mention Zone Technique, you may have wondered what it actually means and how it differs from a traditional chiropractic visit.
Zone Technique is a chiropractic method developed by Dr. Peter Goldman. It was influenced by the earlier work of chiropractor Dr. Thurman Fleet, who developed a system called Zone Therapy in the 1930s. Dr. Goldman began studying that work in the 1990s and later developed what is now known as Zone Technique. (Zone Technique)
At its core, Zone Technique gives the chiropractor a structured way to evaluate the patient and decide how to approach the adjustment.
The Six Zones
Zone Technique organizes body function into six categories, or “zones”:
Zone 1 – Glandular
Zone 2 – Eliminative
Zone 3 – Nervous
Zone 4 – Digestive
Zone 5 – Muscular
Zone 6 – Circulatory
These six zones are part of the system originally taught by Dr. Fleet and later incorporated into Dr. Goldman’s Zone Technique. (Zone Technique)
The technique uses this framework to help guide the chiropractor’s examination and adjustment.
What Happens During a Zone Technique Evaluation?
During a Zone Technique visit, the chiropractor checks specific points on the patient’s head that correspond, within the Zone Technique system, to each of the six zones.
Tenderness or sensitivity at those points helps the chiropractor determine which zone may be the primary focus of that visit. (Zone Technique)
The chiropractor then uses specific points along the spine as part of the adjustment.
In practical terms, this means the adjustment is not simply based on the location where the patient feels discomfort. Zone Technique gives the chiropractor another method for deciding where and how to adjust based on the findings of the examination.
How Is Zone Technique Different From Regular Chiropractic Care?
Traditional chiropractic care often focuses heavily on the spine, joints, movement, pain, and areas of restricted motion.
Zone Technique still uses chiropractic adjustments, but it provides an additional system for organizing the examination and determining the focus of care.
Two patients who walk into the office with similar complaints may therefore receive different adjustments based on what Dr. Rob finds during their individual evaluations.
That individualized approach is an important part of how Zone Technique is used at Life Source Chiropractic.
Does Every Patient Receive the Same Adjustment?
No.
Zone Technique is not meant to be a one-size-fits-all adjustment.
Dr. Rob evaluates each patient, considers what the patient is experiencing, and uses the findings from the examination to determine the appropriate chiropractic approach for that visit.
Your care may also change from visit to visit depending on how you are feeling and what is found during the examination.
Why Does Dr. Rob Use Zone Technique?
One reason Dr. Rob incorporates Zone Technique into his practice is that it gives him a structured method for evaluating each patient rather than simply adjusting the same areas at every visit.
It also fits with his philosophy that chiropractic care should be individualized.
The goal is to understand what the patient is experiencing, perform an appropriate chiropractic evaluation, and use that information to guide care.
What Can You Expect as a Patient?
If Dr. Rob uses Zone Technique during your visit, the process is simple.
He will talk with you about what you are experiencing, perform an examination, check the appropriate Zone Technique points, and then determine which areas should be addressed during the chiropractic adjustment.
And as with any chiropractic care, if your symptoms suggest that you need evaluation or treatment outside the scope of chiropractic practice, an appropriate referral should be made.
Curious About Zone Technique?
Zone Technique can sound complicated when you first hear about the six zones, but from the patient’s perspective, the experience is straightforward.
It is simply one of the tools Dr. Rob uses to help guide individualized chiropractic care.
