Why Does My Lower Back Hurt After Sitting for a Long Time?

You sit down to work, drive, watch TV, or relax for a while.

Then you stand up and your lower back feels stiff, tight, or achy.

Sometimes it eases after you move around for a few minutes. Other times, the discomfort seems to stick around.

So why does sitting bother the lower back so much?

There usually isn’t just one reason.

Sitting Keeps Your Body in One Position

Your body is designed to move.

When you stay in one position for a long time, certain muscles have to keep working while others do very little.

That can lead to stiffness and tension, especially around the hips and lower back.

The problem is not that sitting is automatically “bad.”

It’s that staying in the same position for hours at a time can be hard on the body.

Your Hips May Tighten Up

When you sit, your hips stay bent.

Over time, some people begin to feel tightness through the front of the hips or stiffness when they first stand up.

When the hips are not moving comfortably, the lower back may have to compensate.

That is one reason lower-back discomfort can sometimes be related to what is happening around the hips.

Your Sitting Position May Be Part of the Problem

There is no single perfect sitting position.

But some habits can make discomfort more likely.

You may notice more stiffness if you:

  • Slouch forward for long periods

  • Sit twisted or leaned to one side

  • Work from a couch or bed regularly

  • Keep your laptop too low

  • Sit in a chair that does not support you well

  • Stay seated for several hours without getting up

Even a good chair cannot completely make up for a lack of movement.

Driving Can Be Especially Hard on the Lower Back

Long drives combine two things that can irritate the lower back: prolonged sitting and very little movement.

Many people also sit slightly differently while driving than they do in a normal chair.

You may lean toward one side, reach forward for the steering wheel, or keep one leg in a fixed position for a long time.

If your back feels worse after driving, that pattern may be worth paying attention to.

Why Does It Hurt When I First Stand Up?

After sitting for a long period, the muscles and joints around the lower back and hips may simply need a little time to start moving again.

That is why some people feel stiff when they first stand but improve after walking around.

If this happens often, it may be a sign that your body would benefit from more frequent movement throughout the day.

What Can You Do?

A few simple changes may help reduce stiffness from prolonged sitting:

  • Stand up and move every 30 to 60 minutes when possible

  • Take short walks throughout the day

  • Change sitting positions instead of trying to maintain one “perfect” posture

  • Adjust your workspace so you are not constantly leaning forward

  • Stretch or move your hips and upper back regularly

  • Pay attention to how long car rides affect your symptoms

Small changes made consistently often matter more than one big stretch at the end of the day.

Where Does Chiropractic Care Fit?

If lower-back stiffness or discomfort keeps returning, it may be worth having it evaluated.

At Life Source Chiropractic, we look at how your back, hips, and surrounding areas are moving, along with the activities that may be contributing to your symptoms.

Chiropractic care may be one option for certain types of mechanical lower-back pain and stiffness.

The goal is not just to focus on the painful spot, but to better understand what may be contributing to the problem.

When Back Pain Needs Medical Attention

Not all back pain should be treated as routine stiffness.

Seek prompt medical care if lower-back pain is accompanied by severe weakness, loss of bowel or bladder control, numbness around the groin or inner thighs, fever, significant trauma, unexplained weight loss, or other new or concerning symptoms.

If you live in Centerville or the surrounding Hickman County area and your lower back gets stiff or uncomfortable after sitting, driving, or working, you may not have to simply accept it as part of your day.

At Life Source Chiropractic, we help patients better understand what may be contributing to their symptoms and what options may be appropriate.

New Patient Special

We are currently offering a $89 New Patient Special for new patients.

If your lower back keeps bothering you after long periods of sitting, this may be a good time to have it evaluated.
